DENIMO is an Egyptian trouser brand built on 28 years in the market and in manufacturing. Denim, tailored, linen and sport, for men and uniforms, and every piece is made in our own factory, from the first thread to the last button.
This is the story of Wael Ali, founder of DENIMO, in his own words. It began in 1998 and it is still being written.
I started in 1998. I went down to the Al-Azhar market to buy what I needed to make trousers: fabric one roll at a time, and small quantities of trims. I rode public transport back and forth and carried everything myself.
My workshop was a small room on the roof of our house, with the only sewing machine I had. Long days and late nights of stitching, until the trousers were done.
I took my work to the shops and wholesale offices. I met obstacle after obstacle, and heavy competition from traders and shop owners on price, fabric and quality. It could easily have broken my spirit. Thank God it never did. It only pushed me to keep going.
I decided to go to the markets and sell to customers directly. What set me apart was the stitching, the fabric and a competitive price, until people in the markets knew me and started asking and waiting for my work. My principle was always: “What is made with conscience lasts.”
After years of public transport and carrying on my shoulder, I bought a small van to fetch materials from Al-Azhar and deliver the goods. The one machine became three, I had craftsmen and workers with me, and the workshop became a small factory in a shop under the house.
The traders and shop owners who used to discourage me started asking about me, until they came to the small factory to place orders. They told me: “You beat us, Wael.” My answer was one sentence: “What is made with conscience lasts.”
I wrote down the orders, bought the materials and went straight back to the factory, because what mattered most to me was keeping the delivery date along with the quality. I added to my principle: “And whoever keeps his dates earns people’s trust like no one else.” I delivered on time, people were delighted, and the orders kept coming, from the same traders and from new ones.
I moved the factory to a bigger place and the three machines became ten. I advertised for supervisors, workers and craftsmen, sold the small van and bought a big one. After stitching everything myself, I now had a full team to lead. My principle with every one of them, from the youngest to the oldest: “Give the worker his due before his sweat dries,” because they are partners in this journey.
It became a big factory with production lines: more than 50 sewing machines, 100 workers and staff, and 2,000 pieces a day. One van became two and three, my name became known in the market, and my reputation is the thing I guard most. We also faced the problem of getting paid: customers who took the goods and paid nothing or only part, alongside others who were honest and reliable. But God was generous with us, because our aim was always to work with conscience and offer an outstanding product at a simple price.
I started thinking about reaching the end customer in a different way: a new brand called DENIMO that carries the output of the beehive in the factory, the work of everyone in it, staff, craftsmen and workers.
After years as the link between the wholesale office, the shop owner, the trader and the end customer, DENIMO goes to the customer directly: products made from the best fabrics, by the finest hands, at a competitive price.
